Keeping busy

I've been a busy little bee these past few days. Not much time to blog or read other blogs for that matter. That makes me sad, but here I am on the eve of the Oscars, which I could really care less about. I wouldn't have even known they were on if it weren't for my fitness instructor announcing it at class today. I don't get into the Oscars. The only part that remotely interests me is seeing what the actors are wearing while they strut their stuff on the red carpet. Other than that, you can take my share, I won't miss it. It's not that I don't love movies, trust me I would love to sit and enjoy a movie whether at the comfort of my own home or at the theater, but I just don't have the time to do it. Priorities people. I am the mother of 3 young boys. The only movies I see are Disney flicks that have already made it out on DVD. We own a good share of them, my friends.

So, you ask why I've been so busy? I don't know, it just sounded like a good excuse.

But honestly, this weekend we have been busy painting the boys bedrooms. And they look really good. Sorry, I have no pictures to share. We wanted to paint our bedroom as well, but time ran out and we weren't able to squeeze it in. Maybe next weekend.

Saturday I was able to attend my first Lia Sophia jewelry party. Thanks to Crooked Eyebrow for inviting me. I am hooked. I found so many awesome pieces of jewelry that I want, therefore I have decided to have my own party. I even walked out with a cash and carry $5 bracelet. Shocking, I know. Too bad all the stuff isn't that inexpensive.

On Friday I took my two younger boys to get their haircut at the salon I go to. They had two openings right in the afternoon, so I snatched them up and off we went. Carson was being stubborn and didn't want to go first, so I had Luke walk back. At times, Carson finds it hard to sit still and be patient. I had to attempt to occupy him for 10 minutes without toys. It worked out pretty well and we decided to play I-Spy, which is one of his favorite games to play. Things were going good until it was his turn. There were only a handful of people in the salon at the time. A few stylists and their clients and a 60-or-so-year-old lady sitting across from us waiting for her appointment. Carson beings his turn by looking right at the lady sitting across from us and says, "I spy.............an old person."

I was SO mortified that he said this to this lady who was completely watching us the entire time. Thankfully one of the stylists piped up and said, "Me, yes I am old." The lady sitting across from us did not utter one word. I was so ready to leave.

Carson has a way with speaking his mind. He's so uninhibited, which, as noted above, can lead to embarrassing situations. Other times it can be very funny. Take yesterday for instance. I was wearing more of a form fitting shirt and I had leaned over my computer. Carson was standing right at my chest level and began laughing. I look at him and he points at my chest and asks, "Mom, is that a baby?"

Seriously? That would be one of the smallest babies in history if that were the case.

And if he's not speaking his mind, he is acting out his mind. I was in the bedroom and Taylor yells from the kitchen, "Mom, Carson is trying to put Luke in the oven."

The things I endure. Luckily, it was a false alarm.

These boys keep me on my toes. And that is the understatement of the year.

Clothing dilemma

I am having organizing issues, which is not like me at all. I am known to be an organizing junkie.

But this time I can't get past this one issue of my children's clothes. More importantly, the ones they have grown out of.

Having 3 boys allows me the opportunity to keep their clothes and use them for the next boy in line. It hasn't always gone as well as I would have liked. For instance, the age difference between Taylor (my oldest) and Carson (the middle son) is 5 1/2 years. Styles change pretty rapidly and where Taylor wears more of a "preppy" style, Carson prefers comfortable sports attire if any clothes at all. And nothing has to match with Carson; I think he likes it better when it doesn't match. But he normally runs around the house in underwear even during these cold winter months. I don't get it.

Also, when I pull out the next size bin of clothes and look through them, I can't help but remember Taylor wearing these clothes and the memories of them. I want to keep those memories reserved for him. Other times the thought crosses my mind of, "what in the world was I thinking allowing my son to wear this particular shirt."

There haven't been a lot of clothes that have made it from Taylor to Luke (my youngest) as of yet. One main reason for that is because Carson wears his clothes out so fast. He has this really bad habit of chewing the neck of his shirts and coats. I've already had to throw out a handful due to holes being chewed through them. (Really, I do feed this child.) There are more shirts that I should throw out, such as his Bears jersey, but the costs of those are ridiculous so he's wearing it even though it looks like he was attacked by a bear - no pun intended.

I love to buy the kids new clothes, but at times feel guilty knowing I have bins of saved clothes for them. Taylor is the lucky one who gets all new clothes when he reaches the next size level. I used to get away with buying him cheaper shirts from Wal-Mart and such, but now that he's cool he could never be seen wearing anything without a brand name plastered across the front. His new favorite store is Abercrombie. Yuck. Just the thought of shopping in that store gives me a headache. Have you been in there? Have you even just walked past there? It's as if a rave party is going on. You can't carry on a conversation even if you wanted to. We stopped in last week to check out the clearance section since I'd have to take out a 3rd mortgage if I were to buy anything full price. I am using hand signals as if I'm trying to land an aircraft showing him to keep heading to the back of the store and the music just seems to keep getting louder. And the smell - oh my heavens, the smell of that place. They must wash their floors in cologne and the employees must bathe in it. It produces an instant headache. You could easily get away with farting in that store and no one would know. I'm just saying.

Taylor headed over to the wrong gender side of the store unknowingly and pointed at a cute sweatshirt that could have been for a boy. I try yelling that he's in the girls section. He can't hear me. So I resort back to hand signals and point up to the picture of a cute model girl and look back at Taylor. He nods as if he just got it and gives a cute 'oops' smile. This boy of mine could easily pass as an Abercrombie child model, he is a cutie pie. I'm not biased or anything.

But back to the dilemma before I get any more side tracked. I love being able to sort through Luke's clothes because the one's he has out grown, I put in my garage sale bins and put them up in the attic until our spring garage sale. But, the other boys are where the situation lies. What I have been doing is keeping a bin in each of the kids closets and I label it with what size clothes are inside so that when they grow out of something they (or really I should say I) can put it in the bin. Sounds simply enough, but we are to the point that the bins seem to be filling up too fast or I just need to start buying bigger bins. I hate to have more than 2 bins with the same size clothes inside.

The hard part comes into play when the boys are in between sizes and can go either way. Do I keep both sets of sizes in their working drawers and closet? No, I can't do that due to lack of space. Carson and Luke share a room and there's no way it could accommodate that amount of clothes. If the boys each had their own rooms I could possibly get away with it. What I really need is a basement or more storage space that is easily accessible. That would be nice. But that is also unrealistic at the moment.

Until then, do you have any suggestions? How do you organize your children's clothes? I need your ideas.

Up for a little horseback ride?

Do you like horse back riding? Need to get rid of those saddle bags?

Well, giddy up cowboys and cowgirls cause there's a new revolution going on in the exercise world.

It's called the Rock-n-Go Exerciser. And, no, I'm not making this stuff up.

This product simulates riding a horse without ever making a trip to the stables. One of the descriptions I read is that it gives you gentle back and forth saddle movements.

Okay then. I wonder if this is a G rated piece of equipment. By the looks of this girl, I question that. She may be having a little bit too much fun.

Now this horsey isn't for everyone. It only has a weight capacity of 280 lbs. But, maybe they'll come out with the Clydesdale version for those who are pushing the limit.

So grab your spurs and get riding.

Yee-haw!!!!!!!!

Waking up to flowers

There is a giveaway going on over at Chased By Children this week. Today she is giving away a $50 gift certificate to FTD. All you have to do is leave a comment about your favorite flower story. I don't have any romantic gushy flower related stories, but I always enjoy a good laugh, so I shared this funny memory:

I will never forget this flower story. I was in middle school and my brother’s girlfriend was in town visiting. She stayed at our house and for some reason my mom had her sleep in my room. Therefore, we set up an extra bed and put my night stand between us on which was a vase of flowers and my alarm clock. Apparently, in the morning when my alarm was going off, I forgot the vase of flowers was there and I completely hit it with my hand sending it right onto my brother’s sleeping girlfriend. She wasn’t sleeping anymore! And their relationship didn’t last much longer after that. I think if I win I should send them to her as a long overdue apology.

Wine lovers

I don't even know what to say about this video clip except that it is flippin' hilarious!

Thanks to my brother in law for sharing this with me.

Vehicle with humor

As I was driving my son to school on Friday I saw a license plate frame that made me laugh out loud.

"Honk if U luv giraffes"

And here we are in NW Indiana.

I don't get it.

You've got something on your face.

Are you the type of person that will tell someone (whether they are a friend or stranger) if they have something stuck in their teeth, or some unknown crumb on their face.

If I am standing in line behind someone and they have a stray hair on their clothes or a fuzzy, I typically cannot resist the urge to pick it off. It's like it calling my name and taunting me, "I'm out of place, what are ya gonna do now?"

Yes, I know I have a problem. Fuzzys don't talk.

And tags that are sticking out on shirts! Oh, don't even get me started on that one. It's this instinctive reflex and I can't help myself.

I look at it as if I were the person. I would want someone to tell me if there was something on my face or if my tag was sticking out.

Well back in high school I should have learned my lesson. I specifically remember it was in February on a Wednesday. How do I know this? Well, it was Ash Wednesday.

Do you see where this is going yet?

Idiot me saw a girl with a black smudge on her forehead. I felt so bad for her that no one had mentioned the grease mark on her face. I thought I was being a nice person by letting her in on the splotch, but apparently it was put there intentionally. You know the whole Lent thing. And the look she gave me was like I was a complete heathen, which I am not, we just don't do that at our church.

Oh the humiliation - complete and utter humiliation.

Lesson learned!

So, if it's Wednesday and you have something on your face, I'm not looking at you.

Laziness

Is it considered lazy when.....

I have a cold hot dog bun and I want to heat it up for 10 seconds, but push 9 seconds instead in order to save myself from pushing one extra button?

Is it considered lazy when.....

I laid in bed from 11pm Saturday night to 6am Monday morning and only got up 4 times to use the bathroom?

No joke. 32 hours.

Saturday night Jason and I went out on a date for the first time in who knows how long. We decided to try out a Brazilian steak house and I guess I had no idea what I was in for.

First of all I am not a big red meat fan. I like a fillet every few months and at home we usually only have ground beef. So going to a smörgåsbord of meat should have given me the first red flag.

They brought out all different styles of meat for us to try and gave us a card with a green go sign on one side and a red stop sign on the other so that we could determine the pace that we wanted to stuff our faces. Some of the 15 different types of meat that we ate included chicken wrapped in bacon, fillet wrapped in bacon - and by the way, anything wrapped in bacon will win my heart over. And of course while I stepped out to use the potty they came around with turkey wrapped in bacon. Other selections included, leg of lamb, pork sausage, sirloin, pork ribs, and I'm sure there was more, but we turned over our STOP-the-insanity meat fest card because we've had enough.

I also enjoyed a vintage glass of red wine that cost $15 a glass. Had I known it was vintage or that it was pricey I would have gone with the $6 glass, but as dumb as I was I asked the server for a recommendation. I should have known better - sucker!

So the whole combination of rich meaty food and a expensive wine that I am not used to lead to a severe stomach ache. I went to bed feeling stuffed to capacity, the beginning of a very long and painful headache, and already suffering from the onset of a cold. I still wonder if I had a touch of food poisoning or maybe the beef had "mad cow" disease.

Hence the 32 hours of laying in bed.

I wish I could say it was delightful, but honestly it was brutal. I felt like I was hallucinating. It was like I was in a half awake and half asleep mode and dreaming, but it didn't feel like I was asleep. It was not very restful whatsoever.

I never thought I could spend that much time in bed. When I finally woke up I asked my husband how it felt being a single dad for a day? Poor guy! But he managed through it and even made dinner.

"Rest" assured, I am back to my normal self and even went to the gym tonight and took my favorite dance class. It felt great to sweat it out.

I can't let laziness keep me down.

A visit to the dentist

Yesterday I took the two younger boys to a new pediatric dentist. Luke had never been to the dentist before and I wasn't sure how he'd react being that he's only 2 years old.

Now Carson has been to a different dentist three times in the past year and a half and not once has he gotten his teeth cleaned. His anxiety level is so intense that he just freaks out. The farthest the hygienist got was counting his teeth and even that was forced. So my expectations for this visit were not very high.

When we got in the door they called Carson back and he seemed fine. I sat in the waiting room with Luke and could hear some commotion. A few minutes later out comes Carson and he throws himself on the waiting room couch and starts bawling. I look at the hygienist and shrug my shoulders and explained that this is nothing new.

So she asked Luke if he was ready and he responded with a very excited, "Yes!" I asked if Carson and I could watch while Luke takes his turn. We follow them back. Luke was the perfect patient. Even the dentist was impressed. It just goes to show how each child's personality is so very different.

After Luke's pleasant dental experience, Carson decided he was going to be brave and take his turn. He was still apprehensive, but they were able to do what they needed to do. All the while Carson had his eyes closed.

He finally made it over the hurdle at 5 years old. But, now we have to go back in 2 weeks for an x-ray and a more thorough look at one of his molars.

I am hopeful that it will go smooth, and if not, break out the laughing gas and give me some while you're at it.
